The Youth Aviation (YA) committee’s purpose is to provide underrepresented and underserved youth (12 to 17 years of age), in Sacramento, CA, and surrounding communities, with the opportunity to experience various aspects of aviation. YA provides a structured learning environment for students using learning pods/modules to accomplish aviation STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning activities, designed to complement and supplement conventional elementary, middle, and high school curriculums. Classroom sessions consist of academics and hands-on flight and air traffic control simulators over a 2 to 4-hour period, once or twice a week, after school and on weekends, during the school year, and youth aviation camps during the summer. Typically, there are eight students per session (8:1 ratio). The program offers the opportunity for the youth to interact with aviation professionals. The program aids young persons as they develop a picture of their future, where they can visualize becoming: “America’s next generation of aviators”.
